How it works
Great-circle bearing
The Qibla is the shortest path on the globe to the Kaaba (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E), measured clockwise from true north.
Compass accuracy
Phone compasses are affected by metal, magnets and electronics. Calibrate by moving the phone in a figure-8 and keep away from metal objects.
Without a phone
On two days each year (around 27–28 May and 15–16 July) the sun is directly over the Kaaba at Dhuhr in Makkah; shadows everywhere then point away from the Qibla.
Frequently Asked Questions
How exact must I face the Qibla?
Those who cannot see the Kaaba must face its general direction. Small deviations do not invalidate the prayer according to the majority of scholars.
Why does the Qibla from North America point north-east?
Because the shortest route over the curved earth runs north-east, not along a flat map's straight line.
